Day 4!

Hello SJA Parents,

Quote of the day: "If you are persistent you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it."
Math:
The students worked in pairs to solve five long division word problems. We reviewed as a class together on How to Solve Word Problems. Each group were given a worksheet, a manila paper and writing tools. The students were asked to write down each question on the manila paper and to use the strategy of C.U.B.E.S to help solve the problem. The students examined the questions, highlighted important information and showed their work. We will continue to work on the word problems again tomorrow. Please see word problems anchor chart below:
Use CUBES to solve word problems!
UOI:
We started a whole new Unit of Inquiry on Light and Sound. We started by sharing on our class chart what we know about light and sound. We then worked on a worksheet as a class about the different sounds you may hear in a given scenario. In this case, it was a basketball game in a court. The students locked their minds on and thought about the different soft and loud sounds they may hear if they were at the basketball court. The students shared their findings and were given the last period of the class to note down what they may wonder about in this unit.

Our book shelf in the reading corner is packed with multiple Light and Sound books/resources for the students to read and look at over the course of the next few weeks!

We then moved on to a new lesson on using standard algorithm of diving 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers and using the long division strategy to find the quotient. Please see the anchor chart below and help your child review the math questions for homework by showing their work.

Quotient- the number produced by the division of two numbers. Division is the opposite of multiplication.

Day 6!

Dear SJA Parents,

We had yet another busy day at school today!

Math:
We marked together as a class the homework from the night before. The students had the opportunity to self-correct their homework assignments from the night before. Afterwards, the students were introduced to a lesson on 'Understanding Problem-Solving" which gave me the opportunity to teach the students a valuable lesson on why it is important to take steps in order to reach the end goal. The students were given a situation where a young boy is faced with a problem, and the students have to come up with their own plans on how they can help the young boy solve the problem. The second worksheet that the students need to fill out have to do with solving problems in the workplace. The students are faced with a problem "You work in a deli making sandwiches. You can't keep up with the lunch hour rush. Some  customers start leaving. How can you stop the customers from leaving?" The students need to solve the problem by creating multiple step plans and to also use one of the words that they have learned on the first half of the page. We will work on word problems and problem solving solutions together as a class everyday for the next two weeks.
