TRICK-OR-TREAT SAFETY TIPS!


Day 3!

Hello SJA Parents,

Quote of the day:
Math:
Today we learned about Capacity and we looked at how capacity can be measured.

Capacity- the total amount that can be contained. It is measured in millimetres and litres.

We know that...
1000 millilitres = 1 litres 

What are some examples of containers? 
- cups
-bottles
- yogurt container
- bins and buckets

Exercise: 
Container A: 1.25L 
Container B: 2.75L
Container C: 0.78L

Which container holds the greatest amount? We answered Container B.
Which container holds the least amount? We answered Container C. 

UOI:
The students began working on their Science Fair project and were given three choices for their science experiment. They picked out one out of the three choices which they will be conducting as an experiment for their summative. 

The experiments pertained to:
Catching Rainbows
Reflecting Sound
Exploring Pitch 

We then learned about Transparent, Translucent and Opaque colours. 
Translucent- materials that let some light through 
Opaque- materials that block all light from getting through
Transparent- materials that let light shine through

Language:
The students worked on their essay writing format. We reviewed together as a class with what is needed in an essay: Introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. 
The students came up with their own thoughts and ideas on What would life be like without electricity?
Agenda:
- Complete math worksheet from yesterday, no new math homework today
- Read a book for 20 mins on Raz-kids
- Have a great time trick-or-treating! BE SAFE.

Day 1!

Hello SJA Parents,

Math:
The students learned a new lesson on exploring time and distance. Time and distance are measured  when a person wants to calculate their speed.

For example,

Helen's marble travels 50cm every second.
Hannah's marble travels 60cm every second.
Collin's marble travels 45cm every second.
Who's marble travels the fastest?
_______'s marble travels the fastest because...

UOI:
The students were given their Science Fair package along with the components that they will need to complete on certain due dates. The package includes the 6 processes of the Scientific Method which we have been discussing together as a class since last week.

We then read a book titled Light All Around Us by Wendy Pfeffer which introduced the idea of natural, artificial light and how the light reaches our eyes which signals the brain as to what we are seeing.
We finished off the hour by completing the introductory package on Light In Our Lives and answered the questions which pertained to the picture at the beginning of the package.

Language:
The students continued to work on their Anne of Green Gables final project where they will be creating a quilt using felt paper and yarn. The students were given the guidelines of what the rubric will be like for this culminating task.

2. Complete Avonlea map drawing on Anne of Green Gables novel study package
3. Go on Knowledgehook and complete mission before November 12
4. Bring signed math test

Raz-Kids Update

We began a new lesson on Measuring Time. We learned about the term Standard Notation when telling about time. See Quick Review below:

Standard Notation- it shows the numeric representations of date, time, mass and volume.

UOI:
We reviewed as a class the three variables that are needed in an experiment:
Independent, Dependent and Controlled Variable 
We looked at each experiment questions in this sheet and underlined the independent variable, circled the dependent variable and noted down the controlled variables.
We then watched an episode of Bright Idea and the students were asked to fill-out a sheet regarding the video that we watched. See below:

Day 5!

Hi SJA Parents,

It was Picture Day today! 
Math:
We started a new unit in Math today which was on Measurement. We looked at the learning goals for this unit and we noted it down in our exercise books:

We then proceeded to the students writing their pre-assessment test for the unit- Show What You Know!

UOI:
The students performed in their musical groups as part of our Light and Sound Unit. They all performed really well and their instruments turned out great!

After the presentations, we continued to learn about the three variables that the students need to know in order to complete their scientific experiments. See anchor chart below:

Language:
The students are now in the final stages of completing their Anne of Green Gables novel study. The final project that is in relation to the book is for the students to make a quilt out of felt paper and strings of all of their favourite scenes from each Chapter of the book. The students had a head start today which they will continue to finalize tomorrow by putting each scene together into a one big collage.

Day 4!

Hello SJA Parents,

Math:

The students completed their unit test today! They were given counters and base ten blocks manipulative for extra support with their calculations. We will begin a new unit on measurement in the next few weeks. Please ensure that your child has logged on Knowledgehook so that they can complete the measurement mission by November 12. 

UOI:
The students were given another period to finalize their Rock Band presentations and rehearse for their songs with their instruments. We then looked into answering the questions on the human ear and how the human ear detects sounds in the environment.

The class began to learn about Inferencing Texts. The students were guided by the teacher with what needed to be included in the students' answers. Please see worksheet below:

Day 3!

Hello SJA Parents,

Reminders:
 1. Wear GYM Clothes tomorrow! (gym sweatpants + shirt w/ white socks)

2. Bring recycled materials for Rock Band Assignment 

Math:
This is the last day of our unit review before the unit test tomorrow. We looked at multiple facts, strategies to multiply and divide, and also place values. Please see review: 


UOI:
The groups continued to go over their Rock Band Assignment and were instructed to think of a song that they will perform as a group while using their recycled instruments to play during their performance. The students will begin to create their instruments by using recycled materials from home and other recycled materials that are available at school. 


Aterwards, the class reviewed how we hear sounds and what goes on inside our ears that connect to the brain to help us recognize sounds. Parents, have a conversation with your child and ask, "Explain to me how another person hears a sound. What happens?" Please see information on the Human Ear below:



Music:
The students performed their summative tasks today. They will continue to present tomorrow.

Language:
The students began their research using the school's Chromebooks and tablets to find information on Beluga whales. Students are to be reading the website provided: www.wwf.com  in order to collect useful information for their informational report.

Day 2!

What's the scoop in Room 14? Let's check it out!

Math:
We continued to review on the concepts that we have been covering in Unit 2. Students will continue to finish the review questions tomorrow.
Important reminder: Unit 2 Test will now be 
moved to Wednesday, October 24. 

UOI:
The students started to work on their Rock Band Assignment in their small groups. Students have to create their own rock band, make their own instruments (i.e. guitar, drums, shakers) and to make these instruments using recyclable materials. The students picked out their group mates and were asked to do the following on manila paper:
  1. List the group mates
  2. Name of the rock band 
  3. List of instruments that the band will be using 
  4. List of materials needed in order to make the instruments

Language:
The students were guided by what needs to be included in an informational report. The students needed to come up with their own introductory paragraph for their report on Beluga Whales. They will then use the school's Chromebooks tomorrow to do some research on the given animal as part of their descriptive paragraph. Please see outline below:

We will continue this task on informational report writing prior to the writing assessment so that they are fully aware of what is expected of them during the assessment.

- No math homework as we will continue our class review on Unit 2 tomorrow
- Lesson 6 Spelling Word List p. 26-28 due Wednesday 
- Practice for French Spelling Test on Friday
