Day 6!

Hello SJA Parents,

We are on our last 6-day cycle and we have made a full circle since the beginning of the school year last week. We are now slowly easing into our daily routines and are starting to get familiar with the classroom and school-wide expectations. Please remember to have your child come in full uniform unless it is House/Spirit Day or Casual day. During gym days, please have them bring their gym clothes in a labelled bag.

Math:
We will be starting our test review tomorrow which will cover everything that we have learned from Day 1 in Unit 1: Numbers and Patterning. The students learned about the process of finding patterns in numbers by identifying whether they are growing, shrinking or repeating. The students also learned about creating input/output machines and how pattern rules can help identify the correlation between the input and output numbers. Today, we learned about how to solve word problems involving input/output machines and how finding number patterns can help speed up the process of finding the solution to the problem (i.e. multiplication is repeated addition).

Unit of Inquiry:
Today we learned about the 5 Great Lakes of Canada. The students investigated, labelled and shared their knowledge of where the Great lakes are located. The acronym H.O.M.E.S was used as a way for the students to be able to remember the lakes altogether which surround Ontario:

H- Lake Huron
O- Lake Ontario
M- Lake Michigan
E- Lake Erie
S- Lake Superior

Fun fact: Did you know that Lake Superior is the biggest lake in Canada? How do you think the lake got its name from?

Language:
The students individually completed their own OWA (Ontario Writing Assessments) which took up the entire time of the language block in the afternoon. This form of a pre-assessment will help me see the students' level in terms of their writing processes.

Agenda:
1. Complete double-sided math worksheet
2. Complete Oh Canada title page (if it applies to the student)
3. Bring any item/photos that represent Canada and our unique country! We will post these on our UOI Bulletin Board.

Day 5!

Hello SJA Parents,

We had quite a busy day as we continued with the lessons we've learned today as extensions from the day before.

Math:
Patterns can be found everywhere- in our daily routines, in what we wear, in music, and in numbers! Today we plotted the number of lengths and widths of the various rectangles and we had a review on the meaning of the word 'perimeter.' We looked at patterns in each given graph from the math text and we were able to find the 10th term, 20th term, etc. altogether as a class. As you drive home tonight, I encourage you to have a conversation with your child about patterns- at the grocery store, in the library, at home. How many patterns can they recognize? Are they growing, shrinking or repeating patterns? What do they notice?

Unit of Inquiry:
We learned about the 10 provinces, their capital cities and the 3 territories of Canada. We labelled the map of Canada and finished the Word Search puzzle containing all of the different provinces and cities. Your child has made a postcard for you to discuss with them tonight and I encourage you to have a conversation with them about their "wonder" of Canada which I have asked them to write down in their postcard.

Music: (Refer to blog site)

French: (Refer to blog site)

Daily 5:
The students used this time to fill out their "When I Grow Up" sheet which asks them to write down their dream job and a drawing of it. We will be posting these on our Bulletin Board outside for all of the parents to see!

Language:
The students received their Novel Study package on Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Montgomery which they have put into their Language folder. The students have then answered the questions pertaining to the first Chapter of the novel and we were able to review together the events that occurred in the beginning.

Agenda Notes:
1. Complete Math Patterning Worksheet
2. Complete Spelling Workbook pages 6-8

Math:
  • We learned about the first lesson of our Math Unit on Numbers and Patterns. We learned the three different kinds of patterns (test your child to see if they can remember) and we worked in small groups to find out the pattern rule of the examples given to us. **Supplementary Math homework added for extra practice**
Gym:
  • They had an exhilarating and fun gym class as they got to know Mr. Orr!

Spirit Week- House Game:
  • We gathered in the small gym to cheer on for our House team players as they engaged in a game called Freeze Dance!
